Day 28: Burlington, VT to Acadia National Park, ME

Lake Champlain - Burlington, VT

When we walked back to our tent to turn in, everyone was out around their campfires, enjoying the evening. Five minutes after we were settled in our tent, however, the sky unleashed an unexpected rainstorm. It poured and poured...and poured. We could hear people scrambling to put their rain flys on, take down clothes lines and run for cover. Suddenly, it was silent, except for the sound of the pounding rain on our tent and frequent peals of thunder. We slept well. But, when we woke up, everything was soaked and we spent a good portion of the morning trying to dry our stuff out. After we were mostly packed up, we spent about an hour on the beach, enjoying the scenery and the refreshing waters of Lake Champlain. We could have spent all day there, but we had a long drive ahead of us to Acadia National Park in Maine.

The drive was pretty but uneventful as we made our way through Vermont, New Hampshire and finally into Maine. Before arriving at our campsite, we stopped at Walmart to get a few days worth of food as we weren’t sure what would be available on the island (Mount Desert Island). We are staying at Hadley Point Campground, which is the only one that had any availability. Lucky for us, it just so happens that it’s close to the park and Bar Harbor. We’ve also found that “primitive” tent sites offer a lot more privacy and space than full hook up/RV spots. Other parts of the campground look crowded, but we have plenty of room and are surrounded on almost all sides by trees and brush.

At about 9:30, the campground was silent. It was the perfect time to call it a day (after drinking some hot chocolate of course).
