Day 25: Long Lake, NY

Long Lake is the kind of place you never want to leave. It’s small, quiet and beautiful with enough activities to fill an entire summer. This was a day to relax and recharge our batteries, literally and figuratively. After waking up and getting breakfast, we made some tea and drank it while watching the lake come to life. We never thought we were “lake people,” but we could definitely get into kayaking, paddle boarding, boating, swimming, etc.

We headed into town mainly for cell phone reception so that we could book our upcoming stay at Acadia National Park. Originally, we planned to do some hiking as well, but planning took longer than we thought, so we ate our lunch under the pavilion on the beach. Long Lake is known to have airplane tours (the planes take off and land on the water), and we watched several flights come and go throughout the afternoon.

Back at the campsite, we saw two people bicycle touring as we pulled in. We stopped to chat and, knowing how exhausting it can be, invited them for dinner and hot chocolate. The rest of the afternoon we spent relaxing and enjoying the lake life. For dinner, we made a fire and cooked some pasta. The two bicycle tourists, Harlan and Nadia, joined us, and we talked until it got dark. They are biking a loop from Albany to Niagara, and we shared biking stories until it was time to turn in.
