Day 23: Cooperstown, NY

We woke up between rain showers around 4 am. It’s always a difficult decision when you’re camping - do I get up and walk to the bathroom or hold it until morning? We decided to make the trek, knowing that sometime soon it would start pouring down rain. And it did. But we had nowhere to be, so the rain gave us an excuse to sleep in.

Today we journeyed into Cooperstown. Cooperstown has a few free parking lots where you can catch a trolley and ride for $2 all day, which is great because if you park in town, it can be expensive. The biggest attraction is the National Baseball Hall of Fame Museum, where we spent a solid 3 hours exploring baseball’s fabled past. Even if you are not a huge baseball fan, it is definitely worth checking out. Some highlights were: the 15-minute generations of baseball video (very emotional), learning about baseballs world tours in the 1800s, seeing memorabilia, and getting to see the bronze hall of fame plaques.

The rest of the day we spent perusing the different shops that line Main Street and watching some youngsters play in Doubleday Field. We also ate some tasty pizzeria-style za courtesy of Sal’s. A few blocks from the Hall of Fame sits Otsego Lake, which we discovered is the source of the Susquehanna River. It starts off as a tiny creek and runs through 3 states, including Lancaster County.

We ended the day with a campfire dinner (the first we’ve done successfully) and some hot chocolate. Great way to spend a Friday night!
